Hi Sherry and girls,
I just heard about Jerry’s passing and I am so sorry for your loss. He was a great guy.
I knew Jerry when he was at Northwestern University Medical School. He taught me a lot about a lot of different things. And Vice-Versa. He was never a real techno-genius, but he tried very hard. But that’s why I was there. I was the geek.
I credit Jerry with helping me learn how to put sentences together cohesively. I was never very good with grammar during school, but in our sessions of writing abstracts, papers, and grant applications he taught me a lot.
I went to my one and only Indianapolis 500 race with him in 1979 when Rick Mears won by a few tenths of a second. We had a great time that day.
We had days out on Lake Michigan on boats provided by various students and professors. Jerry taught me all about the heart and the electrical signals associated with it from Jerry. To the point I wrote a paper and had it accepted for publication. I had the honor of being included as an author on some of his papers too.
We also were among the first people to do cardiac mapping of the heart during open heart surgery in the country. We had an article written about us in one of the Chicago newspapers at the time.
We had the distinction of setting up the first local area network in the Northwestern University / Northwestern Memorial Hospital campus. Connecting up the surgery office, the OR office, and the lab office.
I’ve included a picture of Jerry at his desk that I took in 1984. I’m sorry to hear he is gone.
I’m sorry for your loss,

We learned with great sadness today of Jerod’s death after a long and valiant battle. Our thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues at TJC. We will share in the cherished memories of his courage and inspiration. Jerod’s contributions to the field of health care quality and delivery science will impact our patients, our health system and society well into the future.

To Sherry & Family:
I have such fond memories of working with Jerod at the Joint Commission. His kindness, intellect and humor always brightened any of our workings together. Board retreats and dinners with senior staff were always a fun time to see people out of the office environments, and with their families. That is where I learned both Sherry and I are Drake graduates. Even though I left the Joint Commission in 1999, we stayed in touch and I had occasion to speak with Jerod after his diagnosis and he was always so positive and focused. His accomplishments are many, but none, I am sure, more dear then to be a husband and father.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Loeb was a kind, persistent voice for quality and patient safety. Having served as a committee member at the Joint Commission, I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Loeb patiently and persuasively share with healthcare leaders the outcomes of his work. The healthcare field is a better place because of his efforts. May he rest in peace and may “Loeb Nation” – family and puppies together – continue to draw strength from his example. Fay A. Dear Sherry and girls,
I had the privilege to work, share and learn from Jerod and it was a privilege to have known him while I was at the Joint Commission. I know he will be missed as a professional, colleague and as a great human being with a great zeal for life and to share and help others. Karen, my wife, also knew him from his Northwestern days and each time they met at a gathering they would remember stories from the old days !
He will be missed by many for his wit and friendship. I hope that as time passes the good memories will be a comfort to you, as we will always remember him fondly. Karen and I hold you in our thoughts.

Carol Mostow and I conducted a Schwartz Center Rounds by webinar at the invitation of the National Association of Public Hospitals (now America’s Essential Hospitals). Jerod and Sherrie were our “panelists” for the Rounds. They spoke of their struggles, hopes, and aspirations for the U.S. healthcare system. Apparent all the while was their dedication and love to each other alongside their commitment to improving the quality and safety of the patients who entrust caregivers with their lives and wellbeing. Sherrie and Jerod are inspiring, loving and beloved role models whose example and lessons will endure.
Blessings to you Sherrie and to your family,

To Sherry and the girls, your husband/dad was a spectacular man with deep knowlege and with vision. I have only known Jerod as a friend for about 8 years but it was always a comfort to know he was at the Joint Commission doing a great job and ready to help. Jerod had a great sense of humor and also loved his email. I never met anyone who responded so quickly when sent a message. He invited me to be part of a wonderful committee, the Water Quality and Health Committee for which I am very grateful. So glad we had that lovely dinner recently in Chicago with the committee and all of you.
I am just one of many who will miss his presence in their lives. I wish the three of you the most wonderful memories of your husband and dad.. My thoughts are with you.
