My longest lasting memory of my brother is as my protector. I was very shy and retiring and although he was always small in stature when the big guys bullied and teased me he always went after them and showed no fear.

My brother was 15 years old when I was born, and liked to teach me things. My favorite memory is of him on his knees in the living room of our parent’s house, teaching me to box when I was very little. He also read words to me from the dictionary and had me spell them out loud. He was an excellent photographer and loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables. He would them make his own spaghetti sauce using his home-grown tomatoes. I regret that we lived so far from each other for most of our lives. One time he visited me at my home in Rochester. He’d amuse himself there during the day while I was at work. We walked around my yard one day and I complained about a vining “volunteer” that I had to chop down every year. That evening when I got home, I found that he’d dug it out for me! He was a very warm, loving brother. I’ll miss him.
