Jacques Ovadia

I met Jacques when I was 17 in the late 1940’s at the University of Illinois. It is hard to believe that this larger than life man is no more! My condolences to his wife Florence and his family. One of my favorite memories of him is the dinner he, Florence, and I had in Chicago when I was in town for a professional conference: the way he looked at Florence was so gentle and loving… It is wonderful when one is a success professionally and also finds their b’shert!

I knew Jacques from our time together in the AAPM. Though I was just getting started with medical physics in the early 70s he was always helpful and attentive to what we “youngsters” had to say and we will remember him as a brilliant and kind man. He is in my prayers.

Jacques was one of my oldest friends. I knew him at the University of Illinois in the late 1940’s when I was getting a Bachelor’s degree and he was getting a PhD in Physics. Jacques and Florence came to my house in Alexandria, VA when I was living there in the 1980’s, and I joined them at one of the DC museums for a showing of the Greek film “Iphigenia.” We lost touch when I moved to California, though we corresponded for a while even then. At the time, Jacques didn’t have a computer, which made keeping in touch difficult. Jacques and Florence made a lovely couple. I was so happy for Jacques that he had found a person of Florence’s quality and am sad for Florence now. I hope that the happy memories Florence and the rest of Jacques’ family undoubtedly have of this brilliant and loving man will comfort them in their loss.
