Jack L. Gerol, age 84, beloved huband of Sonia, nee Sheinbaum; cherished father of Mark (Elyse), Steven(Michelle) and Donna (Ron) Blitenthal; proud grandfather of Jason, Amy, Elliott, Micah, Lonnie and Erika; dearest brother of Adelaide (Milton) Meisner; caring uncle, cousin and friend of many. Jack was the beloved teacher advisor and college counselor at New Trier High School for over 30 years. He will be deeply missed by all. Chapel service Monday 10:00 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Interment Shalom Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jack L. Mr. Gerol, as I knew him, was my high school advisor from 1959 to 1963. In my senior year, I had decided that I would be going to the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana for college, as my family couldn’t afford a private school. Mr Gerol had attended some summer program at Harvard the summer before and encouraged me to apply. “You never know,” he told me, “you might get a scholarship.” So I applied, I got in, and I went. Today, 60 years later, I’m still at Harvard, where I’ve been a professor for over 20 years. It never would have happened without Mr. Gerol.

Steve–

I usually peruse the obituary pages looking for old guys as I went to camp with as young boys. I saw the listing for Jack Gerol and figured….

It did bring back memories of our encounters with others on the Board. Good years. I hope that you and Michelle are doing well and finding life in the suburbs what you hoped for. While it’s not as exciting as the city and not as many Italian restaurants, it is better for kids, I think.

I’m sorry about the sadness your experiencing now on which the inevitability has no softening effects. We get through it and the sun will come up tomorrow and….. Time helps, but the memory is always there. Take care. Stay well. I’ll tell Dennis.
