Dear Marian, we are so saddened to hear of Jules’ passing. Stacey contacted us in Germany to let us know. We wish we could be with you at this time. Jules was such a kind and gentle man, and he will be greatly missed. Not only did the world lose an accomplished surgeon, inventor and teacher, but also a talented artist.
Please know that we will be thinking of you and sharing the weight of your loss.
Love from us both, Brian and Candace

While working at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, I had the honor of meeting the most outstanding hand surgeon imaginable. Not only was Jules a great doctor, he was a brilliant, talented, and compassionate artist. His love for his patients was shown in his gorgeous sculpture which was part of Emotion Pictures: An Exhibition of Orthopaedics in Art. He believed that, ” Only a true physician/patient partnership can attempt to elicit what a patient really desires from an operation. The sculptures I have created are emblematic of what are deep questions involving medicine today.”
How lucky his patients were to have him as a doctor. And how lucky I am to have met Jules and Marian and to have them become David and my dear dear friends. We were so happy to have had dinner together in May and to see that Jules never lost his great sense of humor.
We send our love and condolences to the entire family.

My family is grateful to Dr. Shapiro for his talent and kindness. He operated on our father Tommy for his cancer and our mother Irene for her Crohn’s; extending both of their lives. They looked forward to their office visits with Dr. Shapiro because of his professionalism and humor. He was one of their favorite doctors. Rest in peace, Dr. Shapiro.
