Obituary

David Schacter of Scottsdale, Arizona died surrounded by his loving family on June 2, 2018. He was 97 years old. Dave is survived by his children, Jerome Schacter of Arlington Heights, IL and Stacey J. Schacter of Sandy Springs, GA; his five grandchildren, Melissa, Eric and Dan (Jerome and Diane Schacter) and Stacia and Brianna (Stacey and Susan Schacter), and three great-grandchildren, Abby and Noah (Melissa) and Dexter (Eric). He is preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Schacter of Scottsdale, Arizona; his parents, Sam and Lena Schacter of Chicago, IL; his sister, Sara Kristal of Chicago, IL and his brother Phil Schacter of Chicago, IL. Dave was born on June 21, 1920 in Chicago, IL to Sam and Lena. He, his brother and sister grew up during the Great Depression in Chicago where he attended Sullivan High School. On December 15, 1941 he enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corp and served dutifully until January, 1946. While serving he married his beloved wife of 70 years on Valentine’s Day in 1943. After the war the pair moved to Chicago where he eventually worked in the labor movement. They migrated north to Highland Park where they lived until they retired to the Scottsdale area. While raising their children they focused on teaching them lifelong values based on compassion and hard work that forged their eventual careers. His surviving children remember him as a driven and honest man who championed the rights of the common person. In addition to his career, his real love was writing, producing and directing musical parodies, such as “Fiddler Off the Roof” and “Oy Vay – Broadway”, amongst others, and continued this tradition at his senior center at Andara. He also enjoyed bowling, needlepoint and music (just don’t ask him to sing). He received numerous civic awards and the “Akiba” Award twice for his volunteer service and dedicated over 50 years to B’nai Brith. He was a hard-working individual who loved the performing arts, spending time with his friends, but nothing more than his family. Dave passed away after a short illness.
