Obituary

Shirley Ruth Hoffman (nee Levine) of Northbrook IL, passed away on October 17, 2020. Shirley and her late twin sister, Estelle Richter were born in Brooklyn NY on October 20, 1926. She is survived by her children Irene, Mark (Jackie) and Robin (Julio Martinez). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold, and her late husband Irving Pogofsky. As a lifetime member of Hadassah and Hias, she had unlimited compassion for those less fortunate and in need. A passionate supporter of Israel, Jewish causes, and human rights for all, she was an active member of Beth Shalom Congregation and a founding member of the former Northwest Suburban Jewish Congregation in Morton Grove. She was loved for her caring, warmth and interest in others, and was quickly considered a friend by those who just met her. Her dry humor and feistiness will be missed by all. Shirley was my close co-worker for 10 years at Imperial Eastman, beginning in 1976. Lots of life experiences happened to both of us during those years, and although I belong to her kids’ generation (Hello Irene, Mark and Robin!) we shared many of those experiences as friends. Not to mention lunchtime shopping trips to Loehmann’s! I remember Shirley as a strong and wise woman with compassion for others, and am grateful to have known and learned from her.

All my love and the warmest of memories all involve first plane rides trip across country in the car all to see our family in Chicago! I loved visiting regardless of the event… so much so that I stayed an entire summer with Uncle Hi and Aunt Shirley – quickly embracing their family ethic and love for live. Shirley I will miss your smile and your ability to live life to the fullest! You are in my heart and mind forever.

Irene and I have lived far apart for many years now, but I am so grateful that our friendship has survived the distance. It is always a pleasure to visit with her and have the opportunity to visit with her mother and other family members.

I remember one time when Shirley was still living in her home and Irene and I popped in for a visit. After some coffee and cake, we went out to get something in her garage. The steps were REALLY steep and Irene was concerned for her mother’s safety. I remember Shirley just brushing her off with a laugh, as if to say, “Honey, I been walking these steps for a long time and I’m not stopping now.” She just had that indomitable spirit!

She was very much loved by her children and she will be missed.
