Mrs Brown, as I called her when I was a teenager in Skokie, IL, in late 60’s. was special to me in many ways for over 50 years. She did not judge me, as it seemed our “parents” and “teachers” were doing at the time. Mr & Mrs Brown would let me stay at their house, at the request of Rochelle, my dearest friend, when I didn’t want to go back to my house for a few days. Magda insisted I call my parents and ask them for permission to stay. We stayed up late and talked a lot. The Browns were like 2nd parents to me for these critical years. Rochelle, I know how close you and your mom were. How absolutely wonderful. Love & Kisses.

The term Yiddish term “beshert” is translated as “destiny.” My husband, daughter Rachel and I met Magda in what we can only describe as a beshert moment. Rachel was attending Northwestern and we decided to get brunch at a restaurant in Skokie. While dining I looked at the booth in front of us and saw someone I thought I knew, Ron Elkus. As I was trying to figure out if this was Ron, he looked over at our table and said “Patty?” Ron is our friend from our synagogue in Michigan. He was having brunch with Magda and introduced us to her. We had a brief, but memorable meeting with Magda that morning. Magda made a point to give Rachel her contact information. From the many stories Rachel shared with us after that meeting, we grew to understand that Magda was a surrogate grandmother to Rachel, constantly providing her with food, including noodle kugel and an enormous bag of cheese puffs. Magda did more than feed a hungry college student. Magda attended some of Rachel’s performances and she spoke at the University in response to Rachel’s request to do so. I am confident that Magda influenced Rachel’s decision to travel with Hillel to Poland and Germany to witness firsthand the remainds/ grounds of some of the Nazi’s camps. Rachel was drawn to Magda instantly and they remained close throughout the time they knew each other. We are profoundly grateful for all of the love and support Magda gave Rachel during her time at Northwestern and after she graduated. We are deeply saddened by Magda’s death. Her life was a light that shone brightly wherever she was. May her memory be a continued blessing. With heartfelt love, Patty Stamler and Joel Jonas

Magda Neni was a far relative of my husband’s family. She and her family accepted us and embraced us from the first moment with such love I have never experienced before. She was a real Grandma for us, not having any in our life. She was a hero, a role model for me, my husband and my son. We are happy we had so many memories together in Chicago and in Omaha, so lucky to get to know her and Rochelle, Charlie, Jess and Regan. Adorable family, what a legacy she left behind, everybody will remember her. May she rest in peace.

My husband and I went to see Magda when was speaking at the Holocaust Museum in Skokie a few years ago. I grew up with her daughter Rochelle, and the two of us were good friends when we were in elementary school. Although I had not seen Rochelle’s mother in a number of decades, I was very surprised, and touched she instantly remembered me! I had the opportunity to talk to her about the Holocaust which was meaningful to me as my Father and both of my husband’s parents survived the Holocaust. I grew up hearing my Father talk about his experiences of the War, and how “we should never forget” as this could happen again! My Father was right. Magda Brown travelled all over telling her story so that “NEVER GAIN” this will hopefully never ever happen to anyone EVER AGAIN! I am a Licensed Mental Health Professional and believe Magda telling her “story” must have been both painful and therapeutic. The WORLD was a much better place because she DID!

I met Magda when I was 16 when my parents took me to Eva Kor’s Holocaust Memorial Museum in Terra Haute, Indiana as my 16th birthday present (I have always been a historian so it was the perfect way to celebrate my birthday by meeting an actual survivor from the Holocaust). As we were looking around the museum, my father and I spotted Magda- at the time we didn’t know who she was, she just looked familiar. We eventually struck up a conversation with Magda and realized she was a docent at the Skokie Holocaust Museum, which we had just visited a few weeks prior! It was from that day Magda became a part of my family. She attended my high school graduation, gave a presentation at my high school, and became a grandmotherly figure to my sister and I cannot believe she is gone, but I know that she has forever changed my life and touched many more. I miss you, Magda, can’t wait to see you again.

Magda was beloved by all who knew her. She felt like my second mom. I loved her laugh, her generosity of spirit, and her memory will be alive for me until I’m gone.
Magda was a role model for how to not be defeated by some of the most difficult challenges one can face in life.
She was uniquely wonderful. She is loved.

A very fond memory I have is driving Magda to a speaking event in Terre Haute, IN. I got to have Magda to myself for 4 hours straight and it was amazing. We talked about so many things and the time flew by. The four hour drive seemed like less than an hour. We laughed, cried and laughed some more. I will always cherish that memory.

She came to Brooks Middle School in February, she talked about her lifestory, and the hardships she went through. At the end, she gave me a kiss on the forehead and told me she loved me so much. I love you, Magda, and you will always have a place in my heart. Rest well grandma.
