Obituary

GRAYSLAKE – Ruth Apfelbaum, 88, of Grayslake and formerly of Arlington Heights, passed away peacefully Wednesday (July 28, 2021) at her home.

Chapel Service, Sunday, August 1, 2021, 10:30 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Rabbi Taron Tachman to officiate. Interment to follow at Shalom Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Beth Tikvah Congregation (www.beth-tikvah.org), Congregation Or Shalom (www.orshalomlc.org) or Wish Bone Canine Rescue (www.wishbonecaninerescue.org).

Ruth was born Feb. 5, 1933, the daughter of Anna (Begun) and Samuel Schwartz. She married Jerome Apfelbaum November 25, 1951 at Chicago. He preceded her in death in 1984. Following that, Robert Wertheimer was her companion for more than 30 years.

Survivors include Robert Wertheimer; four sons, Steven (Susan Lehnhardt), Gary (Estelle Foreman), Ronald (Kathy) and Larry (Karen); three grandchildren, April, Aaron and Amy Apfelbaum; one brother, Morris (Francine) Schwartz; nieces Linda (Alvin) Dodek and Eileen Weitzman; nephews Gary (Becky Willis) Schwartz, Mark (Judy) Weitzman and Keith (Cheryl) Weitzman; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and Wertheimer’s daughters, Susan, Nancy and Judy.

She also leaves behind former co-workers at Douglas Home Center, Combined Counties Police Association and QCSS, and long-time friends Ron Boardwine, Carole Tabinowski and Florence Miller.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sister-in-law Estelle Weitzman and brother-in-law Leonard Weitzman.

Ruth graduated from Marshall High School in Chicago in 1951, along with close friends Florence, Chickie, Carol, Lois, Esther and Evelyn. She enjoyed square dancing with the Square Spares; traveling with Florence, Carole, Judy and Donald; playing cards and ping pong; and volunteering as a theater usher at Cutting Hall Performing Arts Center in Palatine. She was a Cook County election judge for more than 35 years and researched her family’s genealogy, which she shared with relatives. She loved having family and friends over for holiday parties, and will be dearly missed.
