Dear Randy,
I am sorry I cannot be there in person. We had a long time together, almost 70 years. Yes, I know, we
had our ups and downs and disagreements like any brothers but when the chips were down, we were
there for each other. We lived far apart, you in Chicago and me in Phoenix, but our frequent long phone
conversations were a testament to the fact that we coveted contact which is what you would expect of
brothers.
You were the practical joker, but I caught on. I remember when we were kids and lived in Skokie, you locked me in my room by tying my bedroom door handle to the bathroom door handle across the hall. I don’t remember how I got out, but I thought of a plan to retaliate! That evening, when you were asleep, I weaved a virtual spider web of sewing thread around you in bed, kind of like a giant spider visited you. Needless to say, you were startled when you woke up. Remember? How about the time in Skokie when you came home very late and set off the alarm? I know you remember that. You knew dad had his .45 hanging from the headboard. I will never forget your response, closing the door quickly, staying outside, and yelling don’t shoot dad, it’s me. We had great times in the summer at Grandpa Joe’s summer home in Nippersink, swimming, walking the long dirt road to get the mail, playing with Duke, and just having a wonderful time as kids. As we got older, we had different toys and interests. Remember when I would loan you my GTO for the evening? And target shooting in Lincolnwood at Gabby Hartnett’s with dad? It’s strange how those activities of decades ago stick with you but they are good memories which bring a smile to my face and make me think of you.
The calls have been coming in from your friends expressing their condolences but even more, their fond feelings for you and sadness for the loss of such a good friend. Some are probably there with you today.
I love you my brother and I will miss you dearly. You left way too soon.
With love, your brother Mark

Randy was always one of my favorite cousins – passionate about his beliefs, funny, kind. He stayed with us in Boston when his son was graduating from Boston University a couple years ago and he reminded me of all the times my Dad had horrified him with strange bugs and other gifts. And it reminded me of all the times since I was a kid that we’d shared a laugh, had a good conversation – or even argued over our political beliefs with enthusiasm. He was always enthusiastic. I’ll deeply miss him being part of my life and I’m saying goodbye with sadness – and much love.

Randy was a kind man who loved his family and was fiercely loyal to his friends. His children played a big part in his life. Their welfare was always first and foremost in his mind and their love was all he needed to be a contented man. He was also very fond of cats and would be happy to know his cat, Sami, is being well cared for. We miss him.
