I was a colleague of Gene’s at DuSable & also a friend. I fondly recall spending time at Gene & Pat’s on Janssen, from poker games to Gene’s chili, which was so hot one night that only Gene & I had the intestinal fortitude to consume it. Pat had infinite patience with all of us & I never heard a contentious word from her. More than once, when Gene and I had gone to play pinball, Pat had to ride to the rescue as Gene had locked his keys inside the car, once with the motor running. Sheepishly he accepted her help. Maybe a raised eyebrow, but otherwise imperturbable. I also recall a story Pat told about being stopped by the police not too long after moving to Chicago. She explained to the officers that she was carrying out an “alley left ” so that she could back out and go in the opposite direction. When queried as to where she learned the maneuver, she apprised the officer of the small town where she took driver’s education. Needless to say, no citation was forthcoming. Think too in your time of sorrow of the warmth and laughter passed on to the next generation.

Pat was one of the most solid and consistent kind, supportive, loving strong woman I’ve ever known. We were in school together back in LaSalle. I went to Chicago after our nursing training and Pat came the next year. And then the magic happened when I introduced one friend to another, Gene meet Pat, Pat meet Gene. That was it, they were never apart and the world was brighter and more glorious for their love for each other. And fun, what crazy fun would take place aroiund them. When Pat and Gene were fisrt dating Gene and his life long buddy Al would come over to the apartment and soon world heavy weight wrestling matches would ensue in the living room. And I can just see that twinkle in Pat’s eye and that laugh of hers as she just shown her deep love on all of us. Pat just knew who she was and what was important to her and anyone lucky enough to be in her orbit felt the deep connection she would make with you. Losing you Pat is a lot to lose. I am thankful to you and Gene for the love you had for each other and all of us and for your love to give the world Jessica, Rachel and Lindsey to carry your magnificent love forward. You are deeply missed my friend.

Pat was always a welcoming person. She made me feel like I had her undivided attention even when there was orderly chaos all around. She was generous with her love and shared it widely. I miss her and can’t imagine Chicago without her. For me, Pat and Gene will always be family.
