I was very sad to learn of Al’s passing. I enjoyed the years we worked together at U of C, because of his deep knowledge and kindness. And it was a pleasure to see him at Loop Synagogue for several years during the Yom Tov. My condolences and thoughts are with Diane – they were always together.

I had the pleasure of working with Allen at the University of Illinois at Chicago over many years. He was a devoted physician and astute clinician. He enjoyed collaborating with his colleagues in Pediatric Ophthalmology – myself, Dr. Marilyn Miller, Dr. Robert Egel and Anna Newlin. We all met Diane at my surprise 40th birthday party. My wife, Ana, and I extend our sincerest condolences to Diane and the Horwitz family. May Allen’s memory be for a blessing.

I am saddened to learn of Al’s passing. We were fellow students, then colleagues at the University of Chicago and had offices next to each other. We shared many ideas over the years, both personal and professional. I admired his talents and research career. I treasure his friendship and advice.

Allen, was a tough critic of himself and would work so incredibly hard. I was extremely impressed with his dedication and determination. He was truly my favorite client to work with every day.

I began working at the University of Chicago, Department of Pediatrics, on 7/29/76. Dr. Horwitz was one of the first faculty members I met. I remember him as a kind man, generous with his time, explaining “how to” to a newbie who knew nothing about academic medicine. Thank you and God bless you.

I met Allen only a few times. He was already ill, but he was attentive and responsive and made me feel welcome. I hope Diane will find comfort in her memories of Allen’s love and companionship.

Allen’s courage was an inspiration to all.
He taught us how to live and how to die.
The Lord heals one thousand times.
All but one when
He releases the sole from the body.
