I met Rich through the Men of GBN. When I joined, he was already a member. He was very welcoming, and always ready to talk to me, or any of the other guys. He grew up in Northbrook and I in southern Highland Park, so when the Men of GBN were at the Landmark one day, I mentioned the old bowling alley and the Edens theaters, and we reminisced about that for a while. He said there was a Yom Kippur from his youth where he was fasting but had to walk past the Edens theaters with the buttered popcorn smell all over the place, and how tempting it was! Another memory was during V-show rehearsal, a student was playing Billy Joel’s The Piano Man, and Rich just couldn’t resist singing along, and pretty soon the rest of us were too! When someone played back a recording of it, we were so out of tune; we sounded like drunken sailors! But we just laughed about it. He was a really good guy, and I was very saddened to hear about his passing. I’ll miss him a lot and was sorry for his passing.

Rich “Kurnick” will be dearly missed. I am so very sorry that he had to depart so soon and suffer through such a terrible disease. Kurnick was such a dear and devoted friend to my eldest cousin, Paul, that he was almost like family to us. I am so very sorry that he has passed. My most sincere condolences go out to his family, especially his son, and his friends whom he loved and treated like family. May his memory be a blessing.
