Obituary
Alan grew up in Albany Park until the age of nine when he moved to Lincolnwood. Some of his fondest memories were of taking the EL to Cubs’ games and playing baseball with his childhood friends. Alan attended Niles West High School where his speech therapist advised him not to become an attorney.
He met his wife, Sharon, on Miami Beach over winter break in 1966, although they both recognized each other from attending the University of Illinois. Shortly after Alan was called up to basic training in the U.S. Army, Alan and Sharon were married in September, 1968. They settled in the suburbs of Chicago where they built a family and full life together.
Alan started his career in the Internal Revenue Service after graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in accounting. He attended Loyola School of Law at night while working full time at the IRS and attending Army reserve meetings. After earning his J.D., Alan served as a prosecutor in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted both financial and violent crimes. He moved to private practice, concentrating on complex business litigation, and worked at the same law firm, Young, Rosen, Finkel and Silbert, Ltd., for 28 years, eventually heading up litigation and becoming Senior Partner. Alan argued numerous cases in state, federal and appellate courts, including the Illinois Supreme Court. In 2005, Alan joined the Office of the Illinois Attorney General as Chief Deputy at the personal request of Attorney General Lisa Madigan. As Chief Deputy, Alan oversaw high profile matters such as the Blagojevich impeachment and the lawsuit regarding the special election to replace Roland Burris as U.S. Senator, as well a nationwide arbitration over a $1.2 billion dispute with the major tobacco companies. During his prestigious career, Alan was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court as a Commissioner to the Court’s Committee on Character and Fitness and served in that capacity through 2011, the last five years as Chairperson of the committee.
Alan was modest, humble, and hard-working. He cared deeply about acting with integrity and left a deep impression on everyone who knew him. As a husband and father he valued education, encouraged his wife and daughter to pursue their careers and his son to explore the world, and supported his loved ones in chasing their dreams. Alan’s greatest joy was being an important part of his children and grandchildren’s lives, watching them grow and accomplish. Alan’s family misses him immensely, but feels fortunate to have been loved unconditionally by him. His legacy will live on in them.

While technically my cousin, Alan was my older brother, friend, confident, and enthusiastic partner in mischief. I can’t remember the number of times Sharon was furious with Alan after spending time with me. His personal and professional legacy are without equal, and he is loved by so many. His passing is incomprehensible and he will be enormously missed.

I’m going to miss you Alan and all our laughs. A favorite memory from way back was us cutting grass with scissors at Ft Jackson S.C. As army buddies, the greatest honor for me was not a Purple Heart but that Alan spent his honeymoon with me!
Thanks for the memories and a wonderful friendship.
My love and condolences to Sharon and family. Ed

Sharon, Lori, Marc and family – The relationship with Alan and your family and mine goes back many years. It is difficult to believe how many years have gone by. We share your loss, but your memories of Alan will last many years. The Silbert family, Ron, Ellen, Mark and Amy.

The first time I met Alan was at David’s father’s funeral. I didn’t know a soul there except for David and his friend Tom (and we had only met weeks before). I was definitely an outsider looking in, but Alan was so kind to me that by the end of the day, after a good amount of conversation, I felt like I belonged there. Over the years, I learned that Alan was wise, compassionate, generous of heart, so funny, and genuinely interested in people. To see him laugh so hard it brought tears to his eyes (as when David walked through his patio screen) was delightful. He came to California for special occasions, and we relished his presence. We visited Chicago and were welcomed with open arms. I adore him for many reasons, but the best is the boundless love and pride he felt for his family, along with his fierce desire to protect them. I will miss him, consider myself lucky to have known him, and I am thinking of you all today and in the days to come.

Sharon and I have been friends since 2nd grade. I was with her in Miami when she met Alan. It must have been love at first sight because they had a wonderful marriage for over 53 years. I never got a chance to thank Alan for giving my dear friend such a blessed life.
I wish I had comforting words for the family. I know Alan leaves a huge void but an amazing legacy.
Rest in peace dear Alan
