Morton Stern

I originally met Mort at work at Motorola. Mort was a very close friend with my boss, Jim Caile. I worked for Jim for 13 years and became friends with him and his wife, Joyce. Both Jim and Joyce were very close friends with Mort and his wife, Anne. We all got together occasionally to play games together.

I remember both Mort and Jim were very dedicated to their families and their jobs. They were both very successful.

Mort Stern was a friend and colleague at Motorola for many years. Mort was instrumental in the introduction of the first portable cell phone. Although the cell phone, itself, received most of the attention, it could not operate without the essential base station infrastructure that Mort helped create that connected the phone to the rest of the world. Mort continued to contribute at Motorola for the rest of a successful career. Mort, and his wife Anne, were very special to me; I think of them often, and fondly.

Cecile and I were deeply saddened by the news of Mort’s passing that we saw in today’s Tribune. I had worked with Mort for almost 30 years at Motorola where we both collaborated in the development of cellular systems. We have memories of shared experiences developing system plans and business opportunities in many countries. Mort was always a dedicated worker and someone with whom I enjoyed sharing my work in research with his involvement in product development. When the first Motorola system was being installed, under FCC supervision, in Baltimore/Washington we enjoyed having him work with Mike McLaughlin, of our lab, to collect and analyze data for submission to the reports to the FCC for which he was responsible. The relationship only grew more satisfying over the years while cellular systems evolved in many ways, to which we both contributed, until we both retired in 1999. There are only a handful of people at Motorola who were as dedicated and essential to the endeavor as Mort for as long a period of time.
He will be missed but remembered for all his dedication and accomplishment.’

His entire family can take pride in what he did. They can also take comfort and pride in his dedication to the family as husband, father, grandfather .

Mort was one of the smartest and kindest persons that I have ever met in my lifetime. If I had a major life decision to make, I would consult “Uncle Mort” for his guidance. He enjoyed his work and family and his dedication to them was unparalleled to anyone. His presence on this Earth will be sorely missed.
