Bernie was our happy, comic guy. He kept us laughing. He got us together for our 50th or 55th FHHS reunion. I miss him already…

How does one capture 70+ years of memories-from Kew Gardens Hills to Florida
With Bernie it was always a laugh, wide smile😍and love of family
He talked endlessly about his “Bandits”,the pride he had in Jane and his years of international travel
We sincerely regret we never got out to see his beloved Lake Michigan , but we do have happy memories of Forest Hills High School reunions and fun times in Florida
Bernie will never be forgotten , his legacy will live on in his devoted family
With much love

Bernie was a wonderful cousin who always lit up a room with his good nature and good humor. We could always depend on a fun time when Bernie was around. He was also very kind and caring. He will be sorely missed.

We cherish the many wonderful times we shared with Bernie and Jane. He was such a welcoming and helpful neighbor, and we’ll always remember his stories from his childhood, his fantastic meat dishes at their dinners, and his very clever sense of humor. This phrase aptly applies to Bernie—“I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one; I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.”
We feel so fortunate to have known Bernie—he truly made this world a better place!
Our sincere condolences,

I have fond memories growing up with Mr. Spirgel as a neighborhood dad that cared for all of the kids in the neighborhood. I can hear his signature whistle pierce the crisp fall air calling Keith and Pam home for dinner when the group was far down the street. We’d play football on the front lawn and he would come home from work and shout, “Hiya Gang!” Or he’d come out of the house to settle us down when a big dispute arose over a game. He modeled how to build things with his Sunfish car mounts, how to sail, how to camp up in Door County. A big memory was how he stuck up for us kids when some adults wouldn’t leave the tennis courts. He got stern, raised his voice and wouldn’t back down. Among things he said, “It’s common courtesy!” I hadn’t seen an adult stick up for kids like that ever. That was probably 50 years ago and it etched a memory to stick up for your kids whenever their voice isn’t heard. I haven’t seen him for years but he left an impression on me. I am sure he left impressions on many people he knew. He was a great dad to us even though we were neighbor kids and not his own!

I am so saddened at the passing of my wonderful uncle but so happy I have so many wonderful memories of joyful times with him. Over the years, Bernie joined me along with many of my friends and family for an annual golf outing. It didn’t take long before everyone who spent time with Bernie started calling him “Uncle” too. His smile, warmth and bad jokes were always the highlight. These times will be painfully missed…but forever cherished. Rest in peace, Unc. We’ll all hit one in the woods in your honor!

So very sorry to hear the sad news about Bernie. We have many fond memories about him including our dinner club group, political campaign phone banks, summer cookouts, New Buffalo gossip and fun casual meetings with our friends. But most of all, his ability to tell a good joke was the best.
We will miss you Bernie, Patty and Larry

What treasured memories we share from Michigan’s lakeshores!
Long, warm nights on the decks under the stars,
gourmet hamburgers from the barbecue,
white wine only and Catskills busboy tales –
not to mention all the fabulous friends
the Spirgels so graciously introduced to us.
May Bernie’s witticisms live on!

The words I use to describe Bernie: fun, witty, smart, caring, loving, thoughtful, giving, helpful, loved…, and missed.
I know he is already cracking jokes on the big stage up in heaven. We all miss him.
My love to you all.

He was so kind to my children. We would go there every summer and spend time at the beach and pool. He would always talk to them like they were little adults and ask them questions, which they loved to answer. He always made yummy food on the grill for us to eat. We will miss him dearly.
