Obituary

Scott J. Kirshenbaum, 65, passed away Monday, December 19, 2022 following a six-month illness. Devoted son of the late Jack and Carolyn; beloved brother of Gayle; loving father, cousin and treasured friend to many. Scott was born and raised on Chicago’s North Side. He attended Mather High School and went on to earn a degree from The Ohio State University, Agricultural Technical Institute, a place near and dear to him. After graduation, Scott worked for the City of Chicago for two decades before a disability ended his career. He spent the next six years living in nursing facilities where he became involved with Access Living, a disability services and support organization. He was able to get his own apartment with the help of this organization. He then went on to become a fierce advocate for the disabled, attending rallies in Washington, D.C. and traveled to Springfield to testify before an Illinois House Human Services Committee. He also became active in the annual Disability Parade and Open Mic Night and was a peer mentor and computer instructor for nursing home residents. Scott’s many pastimes included fishing, golfing, watching football, writing and painting. He had a passion for fish in particular and was a volunteer at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. A voracious reader with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Scott studied music, art, physics, nature, astronomy and quantum mechanics. Scott’s vast array of friends and associates will remember him for his humor, wit and friendly, caring nature. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, 1pm at Winston Towers, 7033 N. Kedzie Avenue, Chicago, IL 60645. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Access Living Chicago (www.accessliving.org) and the Shedd Aquarium (www.sheddaquarium.org).
