Obituary

Elaine Pearlman passed away peacefully on August 25, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Elaine leaves behind a loving family who will miss her dearly: her devoted husband and partner of 54 years, Dr. Martin Pearlman; her children Rebecca Pearlman (Peter Evans), Robert Pearlman (Liad Ganz Pearlman), Julie Pearlman (Anthony Pick), and Aviva Pearlman (Nosson Knobloch); eleven grandchildren who lovingly called her “Bobee” (Shoshana Evans, Shira Evans, Lara Pick, Mindy Pick, Jeremy Pick, Simon Pick, Jonathan Pearlman, Gabriel Pearlman, Micah Pearlman, Tova Knobloch, and Gila Knobloch); and her brother Bernard Friedman.

Elaine was raised by two hard-working entrepreneurs in Detroit. Her father, Leon, was a pharmacist. Her mother, Minnie, ran a hardware store and managed rental properties. They instilled in her an appreciation of hard work, dedication to family, and commitment to community.

Elaine was an extraordinarily well-rounded woman. She excelled in academics, graduating with a BA in Education from the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and a Masters of Education from Duke University. She was an effective community organizer who led by example and with charm. She served as president of Hadassah and Congregation Shaarey Zedek sisterhood, as a secretary and board member of her synagogue, and as the three-term president of the Greater Lansing Jewish Welfare Federation.

Elaine was also an accomplished pianist and athlete. She won several doubles trophies at the Tennis Club of Lansing. While she enjoyed winning, she valued sportsmanship and inclusiveness far more. Her reputation for generosity and grace was known throughout the East Lansing community.

Elaine continued her parents’ entrepreneurial legacy by contributing meaningfully to the development of her husband’s medical practice, even learning to do fundus photography and fluorescein angiography.

Elaine loved to travel. She spoke six languages, some more fluently than others, but always knew how to talk her way into your heart.

More than anything else, Elaine treasured the time she spent with those she loved.

Contributions may be made in her honor to the CJE Friend Center for Memory Care, www.cje.net/friend-center, to the Greater Lansing Jewish Federation www.jewishfederationlansing.org or to the charity of your choice.
