Obituary

Jonathan Hayyim Kazan, September 26, 1961-June 18, 2022. A loving family, dozens of devoted friends and a fulfilling career. What else could anyone ask for? More time. After a 20-month battle with colon cancer, Jonathan Kazan passed away Saturday with his wife Marla (nee Tobin) holding his hand. Jonathan’s passing leaves an enormous void for Marla and for Jonathan’s mother Frances (nee Rosin), daughter Ronit (nee Kazan) Shapiro, son Ari Kazan, son-in-law Phillip Shapiro, grandchildren Tali and Zev Shapiro, brothers David (Joan) Kazan and Daniel (Tracy) Kazan, twenty-one nieces and nephews, countless friends, colleagues and his dog Lily. He is preceded in death by his father, the late Rabbi Stanley Kazan. Jonathan was a burger connoisseur, known for his quick wit, tremendous warmth and enviable trivia and Torah reading skills. He and Marla loved Chicago restaurants, watching the Cubs, and most of all, spending time with children Ronit, Phillip and Ari and grandchildren Tali and Zev. Jonathan was born in Tampa, Florida and moved to Northbrook in middle school. He excelled in debate at Glenbrook North High School and graduated from The University of Illinois with a degree in Economics. He began his career as an options trader and spent the past 26 years managing corporate benefits for Chubb.
