Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Lee Goldberg passed peacefully on the early summer morning of August, 14, 2022, he was 84 years old. Larry was born in the summer on Chicago’s south side on June 16, 1938 to parents Dr. Arthur William Goldberg, his father, and Diane Goldberg, his mother. His passing follows his parents and his sister Lois Wolens and his brother-in-law Mike Wolens whom he loved very much. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years Barbara Jean Goldberg, who he loved with everything is his body and soul, his children, also born on the Chicago’s south side, son Kenneth Alan Goldberg (DeLand, Florida), and his daughter, Amy Ruth Salzstein (Buffalo Grove, Illinois) and son-in-law Scott Salzstein, grandchildren Kelly Goldberg (Kenneth’s daughter), and Abbie and Rachel Salzstein (daughters of Scott and Amy). Larry loved and cared for his children and grandchildren with every bit of his heart and soul. He was proud of all of them. He is also survived by his niece and nephew Jodi Kimmelman and Doug Wolens (children of Mike and Lois Wolens) and all of their children. He was always close to his sister’s children and cared for them as long as he lived. His aunt and uncle and cousins in the entire Demovsky family, Issadore and Bea, Barry and Sandy, Syd and Dianne and all of their children have always been an important part of his life as family and friends and he loved them all. Larry moved with his family to Buffalo Grove, IL in 1968 where the family all grew up together. With his wife Barbara and several other Jewish families, they all founded Temple Chai meeting in small chapels and churches until the Temple Building was built in Long Grove, IL. He was the Temple Treasurer during the time of the building. Temple Chai, since its founding, has always been a special part of his life and his love for the Jewish community was evident in his time and efforts. Larry grew up on Chicago’s south side and graduated from South Shore High School in 1956 where he excelled in golf and bowling. He was also a great softball player of the “Chicago game” of 16″ softball. He went on to college at University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana and finally at Roosevelt University in Chicago where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business/Accounting. He worked in the accounting field his entire working life. Larry continued the sports of bowling (actually bowled a perfect game once in league play in Buffalo Grove) and golf which he excelled at the most and loved to play most of all. He played in leagues for many years on his home course of Buffalo Grove Golf Course and won several awards for league play. He will be missed by many golf buddies. He loved camping in the Coleman pop-up trailer with his family and friends throughout the many beautiful state parks of Wisconsin and Illinois. Larry loved Chicago’s sports teams, all of them, the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, White Sox (not so much), and most of all, his true love in all of sports, the Chicago Cubs for which he always has been and always will be forever, a Cub’s Fan. His last attended Cubs game was Friday, July 9th, 2021, a home game against the St. Louis Cardinals, the sun was out, the sky was blue, and the Cubs won. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.ALZ.org http://www.ALZ.org or Council for Jewish Elderly, www.cje.net http://www.cje.net. A Celebration of Life will take place Sunday, August 21, 12:00 PM at Temple Chai, 670 Checker Rd, Long Grove, Illinois.
