We are two among hundreds who came to Diversey from all over Chicago and the Country to a place where “Everyone Knew Our Name.” Dick’s bar and his gorgeous vintage apartment building next door were welcoming havens for the first stop-or last stop-on our journeys through life in the big city; where we met friends for a lifetime…some becoming lovers, life partners, buddies…always a great cast of characters from different generations, professions, backgrounds, interests who found comfort and companionship in Dick’s “house,” a very special place. Dick was the Den Father, the catalyst, who knew (and mostly kept) our secrets and, when asked, guided us with a terse wisdom through happy and sad times. Since late last night when I learned of Dick’s passing, I have traveled through memory lane from 1975 when my new friend Marilyn invited me to join her at For Closers (For What??!) to our final Goodby to Dick at his lake home up north with a Jack Daniels toast, just before we moved to Arizona. The memories run the gamut from hilarious to poignant….but above all to amazing, overwhelming gratitude that such a great part of our life traces back to Dick Rosenberg and the world he created on Diversey Avenue, aptly called “The Street of Dreams!” Thank you, Dick. We love you. Ben and Ellen
