Obituary
4 March 1927 – 27 October 2024
With deep gratitude for her long and blessed life, we announce the passing of Ruth Stone, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, who left us peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, 27 October 2024 in Northbrook, Illinois. Born in Chicago on 4 March 1927 to Samuel and Lena Steinberg, Ruth was the eldest of three children. After graduating from Marshall High School, she was trained as a nurse and spent the rest of her career in that profession. While attending a Yom Kippur party, Ruth was surprised that Edwin Stone not only knew who she was but asked her to dance; they were married the following year on 19 December 1948. Before Ed’s passing in 1998, the two spent the following 50 years together raising their three children, running a family heat treating business, contributing to community organizations like NA’AMAT and ORT, travelling the world, and supporting Israel.
Ruth is survived by her brothers Harold and Seymour Steinberg, her children, David and Alan Stone, and Marilyn Fish and adored by her grandchildren Daniel and Matthew Stone, Noah Stone, Jacob Fish, Lisa Ennessey, Rebecca Deutch, and Sharon Fish and great-grandchildren Emma, Natan, and Ezra Deutch, Annabelle and Isabella Fish, Brayden and Kayla Ennessey, and Jack Moyer who will all carry on her legacy of humor and ruach (spirit). Ruth had a tremendous appetite for life. Among her many passions were spending time with family, meeting new people and learning about their lives, discussing books, ideas and world events, dancing, laughing and enjoying the Yiddish language. She possessed a wealth of experience and a unique perspective that added dimension to the lives of those she shared her thoughts and observations with; a bit of texture has left the world with her.
Chapel service will be held at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W Rand Rd, Arlington Heights, IL 60004, 10:00 AM, Wednesday 30 October. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Friends of Magen David Adom, www.afmda.org.
May Ruth’s memory be a source of comfort to her family and may her neshama (soul) find peace.
