Obituary

David J. Shmikler, age 75, passed away 2/27/2024 after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Elizabeth Stein, his son Joshua (Katherine) Shmikler, his brothers Robert (Barbara) and Samuel (Amy). He leaves behind his granddaughter Hannah as well as nephews Daniel, Richard Frazin, Jonathan, Aaron, Jared, Benjamin, and nieces Jill Frazin and Talia. He was preceded in death by his parents Gilbert and Marian (Goldsmith) Shmikler and his brother Michael (Michelle). David was born in Urbana, Illinois and moved to Highland Park, Illinois as a pre-teen. After graduating from the University of Illinois and service as an officer in the US Navy, he took a position in the family business, Illinois Glove Company, in the Chicago area. He retired as company president in 2018. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. He was devoted to his favorite charity The Ark and served as a Trustee. He was loved and respected by many. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Ark Chicago, 3100 Dundee Road, Suite 802, Northbrook, IL 60062. Chapel service Thursday, 12:15 PM, at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W. So heartbroken to hear that David passed away. I did not know he was not well. I will always remember him as a cheerful and happy guy! My heart goes out to Elizabeth and Josh and his family. Was happy to see David became a grandfather and Elizabeth a grandmother. May his memory be a blessing to all his family and friends.

I am so sorry to hear of David’s passing. I will always remember him as upbeat and smiling, even when technology like his cell phone seemed to be working against him. He would always come in mornings with a cheerful “Hello” for everyone.

Although he was semi-retired and hadn’t been in daily, the workplace already feels a lot emptier without him around and I will miss him.

David’s older brother, Bob, married my older sister in 1966, and David and I stood up for our siblings. I knew David in high school because of Bob’s relationship with my sister. He was a wonderful man and always greeted me warmly when I saw him in subsequent years at family celebrations. My heart goes out to Elizabeth and the rest of David’s family. May his memory be for a blessing.
