I have so many fond memories of spending time with Mel and Jean and learning so much from them. I was a guest at their house many times when I was visiting Chicago on business to work with Mel on international Harvester matters . Strangely, Mel and I became friends instantly when we both worked on the Certifying Board of the National Association of Legal Assistants in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1978.. The firs thing I ever heard out of Mel’s mouth was that he had noticed that the stalls in the bathroom where we were working were not handicap accessible. We spent a great deal of time together over the years, including a nine-week trial in Saratoga New York Mellon I went to a country and western bar in Oklahoma and felt like fish out of water, which of course we were. So sad to learn of his passing. My love and best goes to the family. Mel was even kind enough to lecture at a seminar that I was putting on for the New York State bar in Rochester NY. I’m being particularly careful with my grammar and spelling in light of the fact that I’m sure Mel is looking down on me to make sure I make the mistakes. One other thing when my mother was suffering before her passing Mel was kind enough to speak to her in Yiddish to comfort her . What a Mench.

Melvin Meurs was my high school English teacher. He taught me the joy of reading and writing. I am forever indebted to him, and I miss his loving nature and kindness.

Mel was an amazing man – so intelligent, yet humble and soft-spoken. I will never forget the Shabbat Dinner I had at his and Jean’s house, as well as the many Sukkah parties I enjoyed there. As I am a good friend of Jody’s, I visited Mel at Radford Green, 2 days before he died. It was so sad to see him that way, but Jody was there by his side. The eulogies during the service were beautiful. My heart goes out to all of Mel’s family. May Mel’s name forever be a blessing.

What a wonderful person Mel was. I did not get enough time with him to enjoy the same interests he had so I found out later in life. Mel enjoyed the same classical and traditional jazz music I love along with gourmet coffee. God love him and take care of him. RIP.
