I first got to know Howie when I worked in HR for the ABC Network. I processed all of the salary paperwork for union employees, contract employees, and NABET vacation relief engineers for both WLS-TV and WLS Radio. Howie was the life of the party at all of the retirement parties, anniversaries, and promotional celebrations. When ABC merged with Capital Cities and HR folded, I transferred over to t.v. as the receptionist at 190. The atmosphere at 190 was very dismal and depressing after the merger, but Howie would always walk by the circle 7 front desk and make some crack or comment with his dry sense of humor. For the 7 months that I stuck it out before network started eliminating the “real people” positions at the station, Howie was kind of that dose of daily sunshine that was always around when you needed a reason to smile. He treated everyone like family. They don’t make ’em like Howie anymore. He was one of a kind. My condolences to his family.

Howard and Sandy were among the first people we met when we moved into our condo. We have enjoyed knowing them for more than 17 years. Howard always had a welcoming smile and a genuinely warm greeting for everyone. He cared about our community and actively participated on various committees. And he and Sandy attended nearly every social activity or event, assisting with many of them. Since he was a great director himself, we frequently enjoyed discussing movies with him. He and Sandy were the type of neighbors/friends that helped make living in our condo community so pleasant. And although we never had the pleasure of meeting their children or grandchildren, we often heard stories about their activities, interests or accomplishments. Howard certainly was a proud father and grandfather! And our hearts feel for Sandy.

Howie was a treasure. He made me better in our profession. When I heard he would be a director on anything in which I was involved, I was so happy because I knew it would be professional through and through. Howie was also so damn funny in a dry way. Control room stories are legendary. A product of the golden days of television, there a few like him now. Our world has shrunk with Howie’s passing.
