Obituary

Beloved Educator, Leader, and Family Man Dr. Youssef “Dr. Joe” Yomtoob, 85, passed away on March 10, 2025; beloved husband of Parichehr (née Yomtove) for 62 wonderful years; loving father of Benjamin (Laura), Rebecca (David) Dahn, and the late David (Sara); cherished “Papa G” or “Papa Georgie” of Joshua (Sarah Brett), Jacob (Rachel Korotkin), Rachael, Nathan and Caleb; much loved great-grandpa of Norah and Lilah; dear brother of Isaac (Shoreh), the late Angie (Parviz) Yashar, Abraham (the late Farideh), Farokh (the late Nasser) Banayan, Soraya, Moeez, Hooshang, and Jahangeer; uncle, great-uncle, and friend of many. Dr. Joe’s legacy is one of hope, compassion, and dedication to others. He will be remembered not only as an accomplished educator and mentor, but also as a man whose kindness and humility touched countless lives, particularly school students. Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1939, Dr. Joe immigrated to the United States in 1958 at the age of 18 with little more than a dream, $200, and an unrelenting drive to succeed. Despite arriving with no knowledge of English, he pursued higher education with determination and earned multiple degrees, including a Ph.D. in mathematics education. Along the way, he married Parichehr, the love of his life, and together they built a family with their children Benjamin, David and Rebecca (his favorite daughter!). His journey from humble beginnings to becoming Michigan’s first Persian-born Jewish school superintendent is an inspiring story of perseverance and achievement. Dr. Joe dedicated his career to improving education, uplifting communities and being a servant leader. He began his career as a math teacher in Niles, Michigan in 1963 where he rose to become the department head of mathematics at Ring Lardner Junior High School and ultimately became the executive director of personnel and research for Niles Community Schools. Looking for opportunities to make a greater impact to his communities, Dr. Joe next served as Assistant Superintendent at Albion Public Schools in Albion, Michigan from 1985 – 1988 before becoming Superintendent of Willow Run Community Schools in Ypsilanti, MI in 1988. He was blessed to serve three different communities as a Superintendent. First in Willow Run, then at Hawthorn District #73 in Vernon Hills, Illinois and lastly for the School City of East Chicago in East Chicago, Indiana. In each community, he revitalized the districts and communities by improving student learning, stabilizing finances, and fostering a sense of pride among students and staff. In Hawthorn, this included successfully funding and building a new school. Known for his hands-on leadership style and genuine care for every student’s success, he left an indelible mark on everyone he worked with along with Parichehr, who was always by his side. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Joe was deeply committed to his family and Jewish faith. When not at work, his greatest passion was spending time with his adored family. He was the recipient of many awards including: · Temple Beth-El Distinguished Service Award · Ypsilanti Press Person of the Year · Meritorious Service to the residents of Ypsilanti Township, Michigan · Distinguished Public Service to the citizens of Washtenaw County, Michigan · Distinguished Administrator Award by the Michigan Association of School Administrators · Outstanding Service as President of Mundelein-Vernon Hills Rotary Club · Proclamation from the Village of Vernon Hills, Illinois · Apple Computer President’s Technology Award · Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the Year · NAACP Humanitarian Award · eSchool News Tech Savvy Superintendent Award · Recognition from the Council for Black Student Achievement Memorial donations may be made to the David Yomtoob Educational Foundation (supporting the Most Improved Student Award for Hawthorn #73), 2384 Glen Eagles Ln, Riverwoods, IL 60015 or Ronald McDonald House Charities, www.rmhc.org/donate.
