Obituary

Michael Vormittag, 54, of Forest Lake, passed away unexpectedly on February 11, 2025. Mike was born on July 15, 1970, to Paul and Arlene (Vogt) Vormittag. Mike grew up in Forest Lake, IL and on August 10, 2013 he married the love of his life, Annie, at the Forest Lake Community Center. They purchased a fixer upper and Mike tore it down to the studs. With the help of some very special friends, he built their forever home. A home that was filled with love, and over the years became the gathering place of many celebrations for both family and Forest Lake friends who became family. Their garage door was always open.

Mike’s impact on those around him was undeniable. He was the loving and cherished husband of Annie, dear brother, treasured brother-in-law, adored uncle, and dearest friend to so many, and his memory will live on through the many stories shared by those whose lives he touched. His marriage to Annie was a true love story, and together they overcame many of life’s obstacles. The love and guidance he showed to his family and friends will live on in all of their hearts forever.

Mike’s passion for the great outdoors rubbed off on Annie from the start and together they became avid boaters, floaters and paddle boarders on Forest Lake. Mike and Annie enjoyed many camping trips, trips up North to Wisconsin, south to Florida and many places in between. Mike, or MacGyver as he was known to family and friends, had an uncanny ability to fix just about anything, from cars to boats, motorcycles to snowmobiles. Whether it was a concrete mixer or a lawnmower, Mike would get it done. Stories of his craftsmanship and resourcefulness will certainly be told for generations to come. His passion for engines, paired with his sense of adventure, led Mike to the motorcycle culture where he embarked on many trips with friends and longer rides to Sturgis. It also led him to find his career as an independent contractor and electrician at Matrix Electric Company where he was currently employed. Mike started working in the trades as a brick layer with his father. This opened up opportunities in various trades and he became a master of many. Mike realized he was happiest knowing his efforts made a tangible difference in the world around him.

One of Mike’s most significant achievements was his decision to become sober over twelve years ago. His commitment to sobriety brought him newfound clarity and peace, and it was an accomplishment he was so very proud of, as were those who loved him. His success inspired others to follow him in his journey and he became a mentor to those who needed guidance. His sobriety led to his passion for the art of coffee. Mike loved the ritual of crafting the perfect cup of coffee, which he took very seriously. He experimented with different beans, water, and methods, but only he knew the secret recipe. Watching Mike prepare his daily brew was an unforgettable experience-like watching a true artist at work.

When he wasn’t working in his yard or on his home, you could find Mike helping around Forest Lake. Mike’s love for the community was evident in his many years on the Forest Lake Community Association Board, focusing on maintaining the local parks and ensuring everyone could enjoy the lake safely. From helping to construct a new community boat launch and pier, to stuffing Easter eggs for a children’s event, no job was too big or too small for him to lend a helping hand.

Mike was the epitome of a “real man” – a masterful tradesman who could tackle any problem with confidence. His talents and hard work spoke for themselves, but it was his dedication to helping others that truly defined him. Mike’s impact on his family, his friends, and his community will be felt forever. His love, dedication, and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Mike is survived by his wife Annie; siblings Paul (Julie), Dan, Jeff, and Sherrie; nieces and nephews Josh (Jessi Lee), Jessica Dawn, Alexa (Pat), Coty, Anthony (Abby), Caeley, Britteny, Jennah, Blake, Ryan, Isabella and Jack; great nieces and nephew Jasmin (David), Breanna, Grayson, and Carson; great-great nephew River; sisters-in-law Julie, Donna, Mary (Mike), Beth (Justin), Lisa and brothers-in-law Dave and Rob (Stephani).

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Paul Vormittag and Arlene Vormittag, in-laws Richard Bonner and Teri Bonner, and his forever fur baby, Koda.

In lieu of flowers, a GoFundMe has been established in honor of Annie’s dear Mikey.
