Obituary
Nancy grew up in Ottawa, Illinois and from an early age, she embraced the world around her with a twinkle in her eye. She prized her independence, yet she always remained close to family. As a single-digit child, she loved to draw and paint, listen to music, be silly, and dream. And when she became a two-digit wonder, the family moved to Chicago’s North Shore.
It was there that Nancy became a young but loving mother to Tony and Debbie. For several decades as a single mom, she faced formidable challenges, but never lost her life-affirming spirit. And her side-splitting sense of humor became legendary. To this day, it surprises friends and family that she didn’t become a world-famous comedian.
In 1980, Nancy met Bill Bodle, and from day one they were a strong, stand-up couple. The Bodles made their home in Highland Park, raised Billy and Katy, and established a buzzing refuge for a never-ending parade of puppies and parrots. Their house was filled with music and Nancy was eventually inspired to learn to play the drums and take singing lessons in her seventies.
Above all, Nancy will be remembered for always putting the health and welfare of others first. She was the kindest, most giving, most unabashedly loving person most of us will ever know, and she’ll be missed by friends and family alike.
Nancy was eighty-four when she graduated this life, and she is no doubt pursuing an advanced degree in a bustling corner of the Universe, not so far away. You’re invited to celebrate her life with a donation to ASPCA, aspca.org or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, stjude.org. Nancy will be honored by close family in a small, private ceremony. My memories of Aunt Nancy are always ones with laughter. From when we were kids, and she would come out to Colorado with Billy and Katy and she’d be silly with us at the pool. I’ll never forget when Grandma Louise was starting to lose her memory and get confused about who was visiting, it was easy for most visitors to get awkward or embarrassed, but never Aunt Nancy. Aunt Nancy would have her mom in tears with laughter over the silliest little things. It was incredible that she seemed to know exactly which ways to humor Grandma, even if Grandma wasn’t 100% mentally there still. And of course, she had a way of making my mom laugh that was unforgettable. I always knew when my mom was getting off a phone call with Aunt Nancy because she’d been laughing so much.
My deepest condolences to her whole family. She’ll be greatly missed.

I have many many memories with Nancy over the past 3 years. However, the one I think she enjoyed the most was when I had my son dress up as Elvis for her birthday. He played Elvis songs and danced with her. She was smiling from ear to ear. I’m going to miss you Nancy , especially your sense of humor♡♡♡

Many years ago, Nancy put a tiny Teddy Bear hamster in the palm of my hand, and I melted. Her tenderness towards this tiny creature endeared her to me for 38 years. The hamster became the beloved pet of our family, and we prolonged his life beyond what the vet said was possible. Like the many animals that Nancy nurtured, she was loving, vulnerable and beautiful. And she was funny too. Do to a mixup in cages, Nancy ended up with more hamsters than anyone could want. I remember laughing with her as if it was yesterday. Her big heart lives on in her children and grandchildren. May she rest in peace.
